Five hundred years ago, the world was warmer. There were parades in the summer and the Fourth of July was lit with firecrackers and fireworks in the sky. People wore thin summer clothing. Because of the “Great Polar Event”, the world changed overnight. Planting of crops became vertical gardens inside silos and heated from the inner core of the earth. Outdoor events ceased. People became lackadaisical about the importance of the Earth climate and began having more children, thus the need for more food. The planet is doomed. Our only hope is the Scientists working on the “Great Equator Event.”
Sounds like Princess Leia in Star Wars who said “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You are my only hope”. Except I think she should had asked for “Obi-NAN Kenobi”. Of course, I am a little bias.
Dear MikeMike, having trouble with your thumbs? Thanks for the comment! Are you Yoda?
Dear Nan,
Could this be the future? It doesn’t sound appealing. Your story, however, is. Nicely done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Dear Rochelle, You must be a night person too. I fell asleep on the sofa and woke up and started writing. Thanks for the kind words – you however, are one of the REAL talents of this group! Nan
Yep, I can see this happening. The “Great Equator Event” sounds like a really bad idea, though 🙂
Dear Draliman – It seems they might be jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Leave well enough alone! Nan
Very true, Nan.
We humans are responsible for our Earth’s sad state…
Dear Anita, We never heed our own advice. It’s a miracle we’ve made it this far. Nan
Reminds me of a Hugh Howey novel. (Any of the Silo books). I dig creepy dystopias!
But on a positive note ice cream prices have crashed……
The scary thing about the dystopian stories this week is that many stories, including yours, are uncannily close to the what the future may hold.
Dear Subroto, Probably so and this is scary! I want my children and grandchildren and great grandchildren to be able to enjoy the simple things in life! Nan
A worrying look into the future, well done Nan.
Dear Dee, Thanks for reading and commenting! Nan
What you describe for our future doesn’t sound appealing at all, Nan. It’s very worrying what’s happening on Earth now, and how it will affect future generations. There are so many ways in which we’re polluting land, air and sea, and depleting every natural resource we have. The ‘Great Equator Event’ sounds intriguing- whatever it involves.
Thanks for reading Millie! “The Great Equator Event” will change everything. Nan
Could happen. First it warms, then it gets colder.Great story.
Dear Gahlearner, I watch so much Discovery Channel and History Channel – there is always something on about the Earth. The last one I watched, there was information about the 5 “Dyings” from Earth History. Really made me think about our world. Very interesting! Nan
the rumor has it that there’ll come the time when the earth’s surface temperature will be so hot that our descendants will be forced to live underground just like today’s martians. it will be sooner than we think. 🙂
Dear Plaridel – I’m sure you are right – even the scientists can decide on one exact path the Earth will go. I believe that it will take the one it wants to and we can NOT do anything about it. The Earth heals itself! Nan
The care of earth and its environment is big business.
Liked your take on this.
Thanks yarnspinner! Nan
Who decides how to Equate in this event?
Dear Dawn – Good question! Nan
Scary vision of the possible future! Well done!
Great Equator Event sounds ominous. But they’re scientists, they can’t get it wrong. Can they?
Dear Sandra, You mean Scientists could actually do something wrong? Well, the thought of that is mind boggling! Nan 🙂
The Great Equator Event. Great name, Nan! Let’s just have everything mild and moderate. That sounds kind of nice.
Dear Amy, Let’s say 72 degrees at noon and 65 at night. Sounds perfect to me! Nan
What a dismal and entirely too possible future.
Dear Alice, I know it’s scary. We’ve been watching a lot of science channel stuff lately about the Earth’s many changes and it’s scary so I guess anything could happen! Nan
I’ve seen enough of those programs to know it.
Wow, we headed in very similar directions this week, Nan! I like where you took your story– clever names and explanations for the Earth’s changes. Very well done!
Oh goodness, Nan! I’m certainly not buying tickets to The Great Equator Event…it sounds too hot for me 😦
I hope it’s not too late to turn things around and that people are listening to the warnings and changing the ways we live on this one and only earth.
Ellespeth
Dear Ellespeth, I don’t want to go to it either. I like cooler for sure. Surely people want to know what’s going on though. I am staying home by the fire. Nan
There will be nightmares ahead – polar followed by equatorial followed by… . When will we learn? Well imagined.
Dear Patrick. We won’t ever learn – it’s not in our DNA. We gravitate to conflict – just to get involved. Thanks for stopping by! Nan
Sounds like there might be a swing back in the other direction. Those people sound just like many of us now. They don’t want to take responsibility. Sad but true. Well done, Nan. Great descriptions. 🙂 — Suzanne
The great polar event and the great equator event. Intriguing. The world sounds doomed indeed. I like how you’ve described the living conditions. Creates a good sense of the people’s struggle to keep life going.
I like great events. Count me in.
I’ll bring macaroni and cheese.
