Summer Fun

SummertimeBy, Nan Claire Falkner

The James’ were hosting a super 4th of July Party. “Please bring Brutus too”, the invitation said.

“Odd that they included our Black Lab there too but he would show up anyway,” Mitzi, their Yellow Lab was glad to see us and especially Brutus.

There was a large pen erected in the yard and it was full of yellow lab puppies. “My goodness they are darling. Mellie!” I said” Mitzi was nursing her brood when the last one popped up and we all laughed.

Looking at our dog, we all said in unison “Et tu Brute!”

“We named him Licorice.”

  1. Dear Nan,

Awww, who doesn’t love puppies? Cute story. One bit of crit “Odd that they included our Black Lab there too…” I think “there too” is redundant and could be taken out….the included our Black lab, but…” Included implies also. Licorice, I get the feeling that pup was one of a different color. 😉

    • Dear Rochelle, You are right – I should have spent more time on this story. “there too” is redundant. Thanks for pointing it out. Licorice was the name of a friends black lab and I always thought it was a cute name. Thanks for reading! Nan

  2. Well, well, Brutus’ guilty sectret is out! The puppies sound adorable and I love the use of the ‘Et tu Brute’ quote. Your story is very appropriately entitled ‘Summer Fun’, Nan. 🙂

  3. Thanks Marie Gail. I was in a hurry this week and should have taken more time with it. Thanks for reading and Brutus has Licorice to show for a night out on the town. Thanks, Nan 🙂

    • Dear Bjorn, Well, I love dogs – especially Labs and Retrievers. They are safe dogs around kids, and don’t have a mean bone in their body – at least mine never have. Just be near that tail that goes wild when you are near. Funny and cute! Thanks! Nan 🙂

    • Dear Alice, Well, I don’t think they can do anything about the pedigree right now. There were papers at one time – but now with the break in of Brutus, I think it makes the lineage stronger (my opinion only I’m sure). Thanks! Nan

    • Dear Margaret, Puppies are fun, but most mothers actually clean up everything themselves which makes me want to tell everyone who are having puppies to keep little ones mouths away from the dogs mouth – Yuk – but they do a pretty good job. THANKS! Nan 🙂

    • Dear Russell, How could you be mad at a Black Lab? If they wanted pure breed, then they should have put her in a cage – although, that wouldn’t be 100% fool proof! Thanks for reading! Nan 🙂

  4. Thank you Suzanne, When I was little, we had mixed breed puppies that were adorable, but when they were in “heat” watch out, our house was surrounded. Thanks for reading! Nan 🙂
